Embrace the Madness: Inside the Studio

August is here, and Cherry Bomb Studio is buzzing with more projects than I thought possible. ( Whoop!) Between a book cover, 12 illustrations, and 2 portraits, I’ve somehow convinced myself that there are more hours in the day because I am also helping host a Murder Mystery written by an award winning writer in the studio mid month and our very own open studio end of the month. But I’m a Terrier at heart and love the work… also, I bite. 😜

The book cover and illustration commissions were the perfect match for my art style. Each piece embodies the spirit of Empowered Elegance and Feminine Fierce and rebellion, and I can’t wait to see which one drives me the most insane (in a good way) because the book I’m working on is a Cthulhu-themed project. Each illustration will be Cthulhu madness inspired, so freaking cool!!!

I can’t really give much more detail at this point but will definitely update closer to the official release of the award winning author Melissa Yuan-Innes’s book.  Melissa Yi is an emergency physician with an active practice and an award-winning writing career.  In her newest crime novel, WHITE LIGHTNING, Dr. Hope Sze’s romantic getaway at a Windsor Prohibition hotel morphs into a ghost-ridden historical crime scene with potential links to Al Capone…. well the next book is going to be a bit different.

Cthulhu baby!!!

So how do I make 12 illustrations and not go nuts? First, I don’t do them all at once. I’ve got 4 done at this time.

This is the book illustration process that I use and it’s simple. Is it right? Well that’s another question all together 😉

I start by sketching the images out to get an idea of what the client wants then create an original work on paper, in the case of the illustrations, pencil and mixed media. I chose to go this route to keep costs for both of us down. Once the first draft is done I clean it all up digitally and drop it into a book template, ready for graphic design to take over. Then I move on to the next batch. See easy peasy.

Looking at the art below you can see the difference between the original and cleaner digital.

These will all be going up for sale to help our local author Melissa Yuan-Innes with her Kickstarter.  JOIN VIP LIST for your chance to buy these originals or contact me.

If you’re interested in adding some chaos—I mean, a unique piece—to your collection, I’ve started a waitlist for commissions and early bird sales on the book originals are open. CONTACT ME FOR BOTH.

P.S. Don’t miss “Cocktails & Canvases” at Cherry Bomb Studio Gallery. It’s the perfect excuse to sip something fancy while pretending you aren’t just here for the art. Cocktails & Canvases What’s it all about

n and innovation together!
